According to Variety, Dr. Dre is ready to put on his producer hat again, this time for a biopic on singer Marvin Gaye. Known to many for his famous music production and putting rappers like Snoop Dogg and Eminem in the spotlight, his film credits include the successful “Straight Outta Compton,” a biopic about his own pioneering hip hop group, N.W.A. Rumor has it that the rights to Gaye’s music has already been secured. If so, that’s a huge step in the right direction. Marvin Gaye’s story is one that has been attempted to be put on the big screen over the years by numerous artists, like Lenny Kravitz and Jamie Foxx, just to name a couple.
As one of Motown’s biggest artists, Gaye’s work reflected the times of a changing era in music and politics with songs like “What’s Going On” and “Sexual Healing.” His unfortunate demise in 1984, at the hands of his father, ended what should have a been a meteoric career for the singer. No word yet, but with a great screenwriter and director this film could finally be happening. Director F. Gary Gray also tried to get a biopic in production so we could definitely see him throwing his hat in the ring for this film. Cross your fingers folks, this one might be headed to a theater near you in the future!
